Ballerina bun

Ballerina Buns. Something parents at En Pointe always ask is how do you create that perfect ballerina bun. Well, here is a short video on how I was taught at Elmhurst in association with The Birmingham Royal Ballet.

At En Pointe we can advise on how a ballerina bun hair style might look tricky, but it's actually quite simple. As long as your hair is long enough to pull into a ponytail, making a ballet bun should be achievable. It may take a little practice but your ballet bun hair will be ballet-ready in no time.

You will begin by combing out your hair, making sure to brush out any existing knots or tangles. You can then, lightly dampen your hair with a spray bottle of water/de-tangler spray by smoothing down hair with wet hands or a comb.

The next step is to brush all of your hair back. Using a hairbrush, smooth the hair back neatly. Make sure there are no stray hairs, as a ballet dancers' needs to look neat and tidy.

Next step, secure your hair tightly into a high ponytail using an elastic ponytail band. You want the ponytail to be tight in order to finish with a tight bun, so wrap the band several times, depending on the thickness of your hair. Position the ponytail on your head wherever you want the finished ballet bun to the back-top of your head.

Now, try using a brush, smooth all loose hairs of the ponytail. Grasp the ponytail with one hand and brush the hair with the other. The hair needs to be completely smooth in order to make a neat and tidy ballet bun.

Next, twist the entire ponytail into a tight rope. You will need to use both hands for this next step. Make sure all of your ballerinas hair is included in the twist.

Now, start making your ballerina bun. Begin wrapping your hair rope tightly around the base of the ponytail. You'll want the twist to be tight against the scalp, so continue twisting your hair as you wrap it around.

Now that your hair is twisted into a nearly ballet bun, tuck the ends into the ponytail base. You want your ballerina bun to look as neat as possible, so make sure you tuck in all of the loose ends.

You are almost there! Now to secure your ballet bun with hair or bobby pins. Make sure to incorporate a bit of hair from the bun as well as your head into each hair pin. This will ensure the bun stays put while you are dancing on stage or in class. If your hair is extra thick or long, you will need to use lots of pins to keep it tight. Start at the top and make your way around, placing the pins all the way around the base of the ballet bun.

Now that your bun is in place, ensure that no stray hairs will escape as you twist and twirl for dance. Lightly spray your ballet bun and surrounding hair with hairspray to secure it.

Your ballerina bun is now finished! Your hair is neat and ready to withstand as much dancing as you need to do. Remember keep smiling...you have made the perfect ballerina bun.
